Believe it or not, it’s been exactly 16 years to the day since we were blessed with the original Princess Diaries film. And ever since the release of the sequel in 2004, fans have had just one question on their minds: Would there ever be a third chance to reunite with Mia and Queen Clarisse?
Rumors of a Princess Diaries 3 have been floating around for a while now, and earlier this spring, Julie Andrews told BuzzFeed that a third installment of the franchise could likely be done as a tribute to the late director, Garry Marshall. But it’s been months since we’ve heard anything else…until now, that is.
Entertainment Weekly spoke with Meg Cabot, the author of the original Princess Diaries book series, who revealed that there is still an interest in moving forward with a third film in order to honor Marshall’s legacy – and that a script does exist. “Who knows?” Cabot said mysteriously. “It could happen.”
When asked about the specific plot of the possible film, Cabot wouldn’t divulge any details but she did mention that it’s following previous films’ story more than the books. “I’d love to sit down and discuss [it], but I cannot. I’m prohibited,” she added. The suspense is certainly brutal, but it noises as if there’s a fairly reason to get our expectations up – so we’ll take it.
